Military Lifts a Portion of USB Drive Ban

Biometric USB Flash DriveIn November 2008, the U.S. Department of Defense’s computer network was infected with a virus, specifically engineered to run on USB flash drives and other types of removable media. This caused the military to issue a ban on all types of removable media, including thumb drives, MP3 players, and even cell phones.

The ban came at a huge inconvenience for people in this arm of the government who had become accustomed to using USB flash drives as a means for storing and transporting data. Technical manuals for machinery, mission plans, and medical records were all being stored at the time on these drives.
