When customers call to purchase custom flash drives, one of the first questions we ask them is; “what are you buying these for?” Typically, we hear “school functions,” “business promotions,” or “tradeshows.” We love to hear these answers, as it means your business, and ours is growing. Every now and then though, we hear something out of the ordinary. People purchasing flash drives for religious events, photography projects, and even, for charity. Perhaps it seems strange that charity and personalized flash drives go together, but Deviant Ollam, founder of the “Traveling Terabyte” project, has figured out the perfect way to fuse the two together.
The Traveling Terabyte has the potential of becoming a huge project with businesses donating their funds to help Deviant plan, purchase, and ship the Style Bullet USB to service men and women in the army. Funded by Deviant, friends and business associates, he collaborates with others to collect data and preload the drives. With an extensive history in the hacker’s community, and working as a Physical Security Professional, Deviant got to thinking about the Traveling Terabyte Project at a hacking conference in 2006. The familiar faces that he was used to seeing at the conference were deployed overseas, and he started thinking of a way to keep them updated on what’s new. This planted a seed for Deviant who got to thinking how he can provide the men and women with the information that they missed. His idea then blossomed into distributing custom flash drives filled with music, movies, and TV shows to those who are overseas. His project is the first of its kind to hit the customized USB flash drive market.
The personalized flash drives are purchased, loaded with tons of media content, and shipped to service men and women around the globe, totally free of cost to them. Sometimes, you might even be able to spot Deviant in airports handing these out to uniforms as they walk by. Or, if you’re sneaking around a USO lounge, be ready to spot him handing out the USB flash drive with a “thank you for serving our country” smile! Since word is getting around about this unique source of entertainment; men, women, family members, and friends have been writing to the Traveling Terabyte asking for flash drives to be sent to those close to them. Content like; Lady Gaga and Nine Inch Nails, movies like; Gone in 60 Seconds and Apollo 13, and audio books; Douglas Adams’ “Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy” collection, and “The Wisdom of Crowds” by James Suroweicky, are standard picks for the flash drives that go out. All content is sensitive to the location where it travels, as it is very important not to offend the viewing party or the possible on-lookers, whose culture varies significantly from our own.
For those of you worried about the legal end of this project, don’t sweat it! The music, audiobooks, movies, and TV shows all come from personal collections of friends, family members, or event Deviant himself. The Traveling Terabyte allows service men and women all over the world to enjoy a piece of longed-for home in a safe and secure way. The imprinted flash drives can be kept and carried by the soldiers wherever they might go. We have to say, charity has never looked so flashy before! iPromo.com is honored to be a collaborator in this epic project and we wish the Traveling Terabyte project a lot of success and prosperity.
